Scientific Publication 101 - Reading and Writing


The first workshop was held on 8 & 9 Jan. 2014 in Community Medicine Department hall, Faculty of Medicine - Mansoura University in partnership with Standing committee on Medical Education (SCOME) in Mansoura Students' Scientific Association (MSSA).


Course Content:

First steps: Introduction to scientific publication, explore the process of getting published, it is not that hard.
Dissecting papers: study the structure of the original manuscript and know how to build one.
      Writing right: guide to scientific language skills. Learn to wrap your ideas in a decent cover.
Press submit: a guided tour on the online manuscript submission process. Take a peek into the real process.
Sci-surfing: navigate the scientific databases using a map, do not get lost. Learn how to perform a search for a certain topic to accomplish your first literature review.
On the scale: learn how to evaluate scientific papers, distinguish real science form journal fellers. Also learn how to extract knowledge form the available resources. Build up your science mind.

Our methodology:

The course is designed to be as trainee friendly as possible. We will guide you starting from learning the simplest concepts about the course topics up to grasping the whole idea. The course pace through various learning methodologies to get the best outcome out of each one, methodologies includes: lectures, group discussion, working groups, individual assignments, icebreakers, energizers and home assignments.

The workshop evaluation depended on 2 strategies: Pre&Post-tests and Participants evaluation. 

Pre&Post-tests: 
Participants were asked to answer 25 short questions addressing most topics covered during the workshop for both knowledge and skills, before starting (Pre-test) and after closure (Post-test) of the workshop. both with exactly the same questions. anonymous answers were collected and mean score were calculated. Mean Pre-test score was 6.7% while for Post-test was 76.2% demonstrating change of knowledge and skills of the participants of 69 percent point.



Participants Evaluation:
After the last session, participants were asked to evaluate each session in an anonymous sheet on a scale of 1 to 5, where 5 means maximum satisfaction of the sessions content and delivery. All scores were collected and presented as mean percentage of satisfaction in the following chart.
