   Topics of the capacity building training courses:
 
  1. Study designs and its types; explain advantages and disadvantage of each type and design different studies using the appropriate types
  2. Common pitfalls with special emphasis on bias, confounding, reliability and validity
  3. Formulation of research question and setting objectives
  4. Diagnostic tests (sensitivity, specificity and predictive values)
  5. Calculation of sample size by using EP info programs version 6 or 7
  6. Descriptive studies: cross sectional study, case reports, case series
  7. Survey and surveillance
  8. Case-control study
  9. Cohort study
  10. Intervention studies: randomized controlled trial (individual and cluster)

MSRG applications closed

We are no longer accepting application after the announced deadline (4th April 2014). Overall we received 156 applications. Within a week from now shortlisted applicants (30 applicants) will receive an email to inform them about the details of the interview appointment and the final results of the grant winners will be announced on this website.

Evidence Based Minds (Launching Event of MSRG)



The MSRG launching event (Sunday - 30 March 2014) will act as an orientation with more details on the scholarship and the grant, the process and outcomes. In addition to a short lecture "Evidence Based Minds".

The event is hosted By FOCUS For capacity building solution and Care & Friends of GIT Patients Society represented by Prof. Dr. Gamal El Ebiedy (CEO) in partnership with SAFWA group

Medical Students Research Grant



Scientific research should be one of the top priorities of institutes aiming at improving the quality of healthcare. Promotion of the concept of scientific research would raise a generation of healthcare givers who are aware of the most updated techniques, methodologies, and evidence based practices. In regards, Care and Friends of GIT Patients Society (CFGPS) and FOCUS for capacity building solutions are glad to announce the call for applying to Medical Students Research Grant

Procedures

According to predefined criteria, 15 medical students would be offered a scholarship to raise their capacities in scientific research through a training held by FOCUS and funded by the CFGPS. Students whom would finish the training requirements successfully would be allowed subsequently to enter a competition to earn 3 small grants (1,500 L.E each) offered by CFGPS to carry out a research project with supervision form FOCUS.

A call for application would be launched with a deadline of 4th April 2014.

Criteria for eligible applicants

1.      Medical students or intern or postgraduate.
2.      Egyptian students only are offered scholarship. Foreigner students or Egyptian postgraduates are welcomed to apply but they will pay the training fees of 600 L.E then they could be able to compete for the research grant.
3.      Available for at least three hours twice weekly for six weeks since the start of the course.
4.      Secure Internet access for home assignments.
5.      Able to secure a laptop will be used during session.

After the deadline of application, FOCUS will shortlist participants into 30 candidates, then interviews would be held in the CFGPS office by FOCUS to select the final 15 winners of the scholarship.

Interview dates would be advertised on the webpage.

Accepted candidates would be asked to pay 100 L.E each as a deposit that will be refunded at the end of the course provided that the candidate had attended at least 80% of training hours.



The Training Course

The course would be held in CFGPS office by FOCUS as follows:

Research 101
      
15 Training hours
After this course, participant would be able to understand research processes and plan small-scale research projects
Primary topics: Basics of research, study design, quantitative and qualitative research, besides research proposal writing.

Medical statistics   

21 Training hours    
After this course, participants would be able to learn about statistics terms, data and perform basic analysis, as there would be hands on training on SPSS.
Primary topics: Introduction, descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, null hypothesis significance testing.

Scientific publication    

18 Training hours    
In this workshop, participants will be aware of scientific publishing, peer review journals, and scientific writing.
Primary topics: Literature review, scientific language and how to write original manuscript, besides online manuscript submission.

 The Research Grant

After the training courses, candidates will be asked to submit a research proposal to win one of the 3 grants offered by CFGPS provided that he/she:

1.      Attended at least 80% of training hours
2.      Scored at least 60% on the post test.
3.    Submitted a complete research proposal as instructed by the FOCUS trainers. Incomplete applications would be disregarded.

Candidates could apply individually or in teams of maximum 3 members each.
It is not allowed to submit more than one proposal.

FOCUS trainers will evaluate the proposals and recommend the best 5 to the CFGPS to select the final 3 winners of the grant.

Winners will receive 500 L.E at the beginning of the research project, 500 L.E when they hand in the final results to the CFGPS. The final 500 LE when candidates succeeded in publishing their work in a well recognized peer-reviewed journal.
